Crypto ETF
Rules, protection and tax below are for Brazil.
What it is
An ETF that holds bitcoin or ether in custody and issues shares tracking the price. It removes the practical hazards of owning coins yourself, the exchanges, wallets and keys, and puts the exposure inside a normal account, sometimes a tax-sheltered one. Allowed in the US since 2024 and earlier in Canada and Brazil; blocked for retail in some other countries.
What it does not remove is the price. Bitcoin has lost more than half its value five times in fifteen years and has no income, no earnings and no cash flow behind it. Its long-run return is a bet that more people will want it later.
The honest description is a highly volatile asset with a real chance of very large losses, wrapped in a convenient shell.
How it works
- The fund holds the cryptocurrency with a custodian and its shares trade on the exchange.
- The share price tracks the coin price minus the ongoing charge, which is higher than for share index funds.
- There is no income; the only return is price change.
- In some countries it can sit inside a tax-sheltered account, which is the main practical advantage.
The honest pros and cons
For
- No wallets, keys or exchange accounts to manage or lose.
- Regulated custody and ordinary brokerage reporting.
- Can sit alongside other holdings and inside some tax shelters.
Against
- The full price risk of the coin: halving in value is a normal event, not a rare one.
- Fees are higher than share or bond index funds.
- No income and no fundamental anchor for the price.
- Not available to retail in every country, and the rules keep changing.
Getting it in Brazil
not researchedWherever you are
- Decide what size of loss you could shrug off, and let that cap the holding; many people choose a few percent or none.
- Compare the fund's fee and custody arrangements; they differ more than for other ETFs.
- Check whether your country allows retail purchase and whether a tax shelter accepts it.
